DreamHost Review – Day 1

I first logged into my dreamhost account today, after 3 years of service from Neureal.com (the last 1.5 being shotty).

First thing I’ve noticed:

1) Server delay when I type at the command line. Honestly, if this does not improve, I will move to another host. Delayed-typing on the command-line IS one of the MOST annoying things ever :-(

2) Environment looks great, simplistic, intuitive directory structure. :-)
$HOME/domain.com
$HOME/domain2.com
$HOME/logs/domain.com
$HOME/logs/domain2.com

3) One little annoying thing, I ran ‘top’, and all I got were my processes. No way I can tell what/who else is hogging resources. Kind of lame, especially because I want to know if the delayed typing on the command line is from another user running a one-time process, or is that expected normal behavior. :-|

4) The DreamHost control panel is EXCELLENT! (and i’m not just saying that). I’ve been sticking with Neureal the last year because I loved the simplicity and flexibility of HSphere. I never liked web-admin or cpanel. But this one rocks. I can manage user groups, add users with ssh or ftp-only access, restrict them to a directory, etc. This is great!

That’s it so far! I’ll keep you all posted on my assessment of this “dream” host.
I have forwarded this to them as well.

Here’s a traceroute, as you can see there is some packet loss both on SBC’s end, and at the DreamHost end of things:

I’m interested in learning about your experience with dreamhost. I like their feature list and price, especially the shell and error-log access. But I’m concerned that they might oversell their servers and as a result have slow reponse for hosted sites. I’m about to build a new site and am considering dreamhost. I currently use a host called sectorlink. They have excellent service and you can call them any time and talk to someone if you need to. My only complaint about sectorlink is that they do not offer shell or error log access, but neither do MOST hosting companies. Dreamhost is the only host that I’ve seen that offers shell access on shared hosting accounts.

    Keep me posted. Thanks

I would say dreamhost is great if you’re starting out.

However, my political forums gets over 1 million hits per month, and it seems their server is beckoned to it’s knees. I believe it’s a slow bottleneck between the web server and the database server. Probably wouldn’t be noticable typically.

    chovy,

Thanks for the update concerning dreamhost. I doubt that my sites will get a million hits a month so maybe they would be ok.
