Brain Teaser from NPR’s “Car Talk”

So while driving on the road this Sunday morning, I was listening to NPR’s “Car Talk” show, and they came to their weekly Brain Teaser.

The brain teaser is:

The marketing department of a large corporation, headquartered in Delaware, asked one of it’s employees to plan out a trip in which he drives through each of the 48 contiguous states, without ever crossing back into a state he has already visited, starting in Delaware.

Shortly before the employee sat down to plan his trip, the boss came up to him and said, “I will meet you in your last state, I’ve been looking for a reason to go back there and visit. I’ll pick you up and fly you back in the corporate jet, after you turn in the rental car.”

How did the boss know which state the employee would end up in?

I’ve been thinking about this all day, and haven’t come up with any good answer (well maybe one). If you have an idea, post it in the comments section!

The answer should be Maine. This is the only state that has a border with only 1 other state and it will be impossible to go to and from that state to any other state without crossing New Hampshire.
