OFX Format…Why You Should Insist

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

Due to recent snaffoos with the latest Quicken and several of the financial institutions I do business with, I’ve decided to give GnuCash a run.

After the last few years, seeing how the interface still looks like pre-2000 – I finally said, either it’s dead, or it works.

I’ve noticed that at least one of my providers is switching to the OFX format. Hopefully it’s well-formed XML, but I’m not putting it past these people to Flug it all up from the start with missing closing tags, etc.

BOFA – Online Banking and OFX Support

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

….Bofa has now gone “Internet Explorer Only”.

I eventually left BofA altogether after getting married, and their lack of support for OFX format and cross-browser compatibility in their web site.

Also, their inhouse “security” feature of showing you a picture seemed rather pointless. Not sure there’s a point to that one, although somebody must see it.

Gnu Cash

For those interested, the OFX format is the “Open Financial Exchange” format, which would allow people to use whatever financial software they want, instead of the typical two choices of QUicken or MS-MOney. I am hopeful that eventually, major financial institutions will agree upon the OFX format, and this will create a little friendly competition between the major financial software providers. Including open source solutions like Gnu Cash.

“GnuCash is the first free software application to support the Open Financial Exchange protocol that many banks and financial services are starting to use.”
