I came across this the other day, after about 7+ years of using ‘activestate’ mailing list.

Question: Is it possible to hide your javascript source code so that people cannot read it?

With the advent and adoptation of AJAX, is it secure enough to actually write proprietary code without anyone looking at it?

I have to admit, most attempts I’ve seen are easily defeatable….example “disabling right-click” so that I can’t do “right-click->view source”….work-around is: Use pulldown menu.

So now that you get the direction I’m going, before I move my “secret sauce” into javascript I want to know if I can be assured that no one on the outside can read it, short of breaking into the repository on the server where it is developed (that is a different issue).

This is not a trick question, afaik.

To those who are not following me - if I can see it, I can learn how the system works, and find potential weaknesses (without server access or permission).

If you’re response is: hire a lawyer, I’ll accept that.

For personal reasons, I may or may not be able to tell you how to see the code to your hiding solution, in this case I will simply say “afaik, it’s doable” - which basically means I think I can do it. If I don’t know where to begin I will tell you that. If I know for a fact that it can be done (ie - I’ve done it), I will let you know that.

If the proposed solution is not secure and has a known common practice in gaining readability, I will certainly point you to the public source that explains the “work-around” if I can find one.

For some odd reason, I’ve become quite interested in securing my code before I write my AJAX application.
